Following the multiple eruptions of the La Soufrière volcano in Saint Vincent on April 9th, 2021, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced that only those who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 would be evacuated.

In a press conference on April 10th, 2021, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves stated that "The chief medical officer would be identifying the persons already vaccinated so that we can get them on the ship."

Gonsalves stated that those who take the vaccination would have to wait a day or two before evacuating because of side effects such as "wooziness in the head."

Some Vincentians are not so eager to get the injection. Keandra Lewis, a 26-year-old of Troumaca, Saint Vincent, said, "Only problem I will have is if they (the authorities) say anything about the vaccine. I rather go back go meet Soufriere than take the vaccine. Me ain't in this vaccine thing. The vaccine to me, it not 100 per cent. So me hear people ah die from it too, so rather me hear me dead from natural causes than me take the vaccine and me dead."

Around 16,000 people who live within the "red zone" of the eruption need to be evacuated.
